Who we are

Engracia Madejón

Senior researcher at IRNAS and member of the research group “Sustainable use of the soil-plant system” (SOILPLANT). Leader of the CSIC-University of Seville Unit “Sustainable use of soil and water in agriculture”. Soil chemistry expert focused on soil conservation of agroecosystems through the use of organic materials. Experience in biochemical and physical indicators of restoration in degraded and contaminated soils. Vice President of the Spanish Soil Science Society (SECS) and Chief Editor of SOIL, international scientific journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Maria Teresa Domínguez

Associate Professor at the University of Seville. Soil biogeochemistry expert with special interest in the study of the impact of some drivers of soil degradation and climate change on soil functioning, especially on microbial activity and diversity. A relevant part of her research has focused on understanding the impacts of trace element contamination on soils and on evaluating different approaches to managing contaminated sites.

Paula Madejón

Senior researcher at IRNAS and member of the research group (SOILPLANT). She is a biologist specialized in the study of soil-plant interactions in contaminated and degraded soils. Her main interest is the study of different sustainable strategies to improve soil physical, chemical and biological conditions to recover soil health and improve its ecosystem services.

Juan Carlos García-Gil

Senior researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICA-CSIC, Madrid), member of the Sustainable Agriculture and Biogeochemistry Group (SAB). His research career has focused on evaluating the effects of the application of organic amendments on crops and physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the soil in dryland Mediterranean agroecosystems in experimental scenarios of climate change. These studies have been carried out in long-term field experiments, using different practices of organic fertilization, crop rotation and soil tillage.

Pilar Burgos

Senior Specialized Technician at the IRNAS-CSIC. Responsible for the IRNAS Analysis Service, which provides a scientific-technical service to the scientific staff of Research Centers and Universities, as well as to public and private companies. Direction and management of the analysis service, fine-tuning of the analytical methodology and implementation of the quality control system.

Marco Panettieri

Junior researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICA-CSIC, Madrid). His research topics are urban agriculture, rooftop cultivation with organic amendments from urban waste and the characterization of soil organic matter with cutting-edge techniques within the Sustainable Agriculture and Biogeochemistry (SAB) group.

Elena Fernandez

Professor at the University of Seville, participant in various research projects related to soils and environmental sustainability, including studies on the application of organic amendments in agricultural soils. Coordinator of the Doctoral Program “Natural Resources and Environment” regulated by the R.D. 1393/2007 and very involved in management tasks within the Department of Crystallography, Mineralogy and Agricultural Chemistry of the University of Seville.

Laura Lozano

Postdoctoral researcher and member of the SOILPLANT research group at the IRNAS-CSIC. PhD with mention in Environmental and Soil Sciences from the University of Bangor. He has explored the role of riparian areas in terms of provision of ecosystem services across a wide range of habitat types (improved grassland, woodland, heathland, semi-natural grassland). Currently focused on the role of organic amendments in Mediterranean agroecosystems.
